Vivens, your journey from rural western Rwanda to leading a game-changing workforce platform is inspiring. What pivotal moments shaped your path to founding Umurava?

I was born and raised in a rural area of Rwanda, but I excelled in mathematics and science during my primary and high school years. These foundational skills helped me secure admission to Kepler University, where I studied business management. While studying, I invested time in learning data and IT skills, which led to job opportunities even before I graduated.

After landing a corporate job, I noticed many talented young people were still unemployed despite their potential. This pushed me to research why so many remain jobless while companies face talent shortages in today’s digital economy. Inspired by my findings, I left my job to solve this problem—and Umurava was born.

In just three years, Umurava has matched over 1,200 talents with jobs, collaborated with 400+ companies, and engaged 25,000+ job seekers. What’s the secret behind these impressive numbers?

From the start, we focused on delivering vetted, high-quality talent to our partner companies. By winning their trust and exceeding expectations, they helped us grow through word-of-mouth marketing.

We’ve also invested in creative marketing, communication, and sales strategies, allowing us to onboard more employers and clients quickly.

The job market is shifting rapidly. How does Umurava ensure young professionals remain future-proof and industry-ready?

We’ve launched Career Ticket, a job readiness program that builds digital confidence and soft skills to help young professionals adapt to tech-enabled workplaces.

We also offer career guidance to ensure job seekers develop skills that align with the dynamic job market. Additionally, our Skills Challenges Platform allows young talent to participate in hackathons and project-based competitions, building real-world experience and portfolios that attract employers.

Lastly, we collaborate with educational institutions to invest in teaching in-demand skills.

AI is rewriting the rules of work. Some fear job losses, while others see endless potential. Where does Africa stand in this digital revolution, and how does Umurava help its talent stay ahead?

The key to staying ahead is awareness. Umurava is already working with universities to integrate in-demand skills into their curricula. This ensures that young professionals are prepared for AI-driven and tech-focused career paths.

Rwanda has seen the Umurava effect—thousands of young people upskilled, connected, and hired. Now, the big question: what’s next? How do you plan to take Umurava beyond Rwanda and into the rest of East Africa?

In the next two years, we plan to expand our talent pool across East Africa, including Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. Our goal is to make Umurava a continental and global platform. Through partnerships like this one with Tammwe, we’ll also attract more employers from Europe and America looking to hire and outsource work to Africa.

We’re also partnering with governments, development organizations, and educational institutions to offer value-added education-to-employment programs that meet current job market demands.

What challenges do you foresee in scaling Umurava across borders, and how do you plan to tackle them?

Scaling across borders requires navigating different regulatory environments, internet infrastructure gaps, and diverse job market needs. We plan to address these by building local partnerships and leveraging digital tools that make cross-border collaboration seamless.

If you could fast-forward 10 years, where do you see Umurava? What’s your ultimate vision for Africa’s young professionals?

In 10 years, we aim to place over 20,000 talents in full-time and freelance jobs and collaborate with 5,000+ companies.

Finally, for a young job seeker reading this, unsure of their next step—what’s your best piece of advice?

Create a talent profile on the Umurava platform. Our team will assess your profile and recommend job opportunities if you qualify or skills-building opportunities if you don’t.
